How Curtains and Blinds Prevent Home Security Issues

How Curtains and Blinds Prevent Home Security Issues

Thieves will enter a home in one of two ways: through the doors and through the windows.  Most doors come with doorknob locks and deadbolts but windows can often be overlooked. For this reason, it is important to increase the security of your home by making sure your windows are not inviting a break in.  One of the best and easiest ways to prevent home security issues in your home is by using blinds and curtains.  We have provided you with some of the ways using blinds and curtains can help increase security in your home.

1. Eliminates Outside Visibility – Good quality blinds and/or curtains that are not see-through prevent anyone from seeing inside your home.  Many thieves will look inside your home when you are not home to scope it out and see what kind of furnishings you may have that they are interested in.  Having blinds and curtains in place and closed will prevent them from being able to see what is inside. If they can’t see what is inside they are a lot less likely to try breaking in.

2. Prevents Thieves from Learning Habits – Since the thieves interested in breaking into your home will not be able to see inside, they will not be able to learn your routine either.  This is enhanced even more if you use times on your lights and electronics so they will not be able to tell when you go to bed or when you are leaving the home, especially if there is a vehicle left in the driveway or garage when you are away.  Some thieves will break in even if you are home in bed, so if there is a chance you are awake, they will think twice about attempting a break in. Make sure your timers are random so there is no pattern of lights coming on and going off that they can pick up on.

3. Takes Away the ‘Ease of Access’ Factor – Heavy curtains and blinds are great deterrents for a thief that is looking for an easy in/easy out target. Having to fight the blinds and/or curtains and not knowing if there is a dog or alarm system on the other side of them will usually encourage them to seek another target and move on.  It is not a guarantee of course, but it can definitely make them think twice.

When a thief can see everything you have in your home it can almost be an invitation for them to come back and attempt a break in. This is even more prevalent at Christmastime when presents are stacked under the tree.  You don’t want a thief to be able to easily look into your windows and see your TVs, computers, valuables and more.  Using quality blinds and heavy, non-see thought curtains will take away one of the common methods they use to scope out homes and decide who they will target.

Even good quality blinds and curtains are usually inexpensive, which makes them a great choice to use in combination with other methods.  Even if you have a home security system, using blinds and curtains can help reduce the chances of a break in even more.  They are the perfect choice to use with any of the other home security methods you are interested in and they provide you with privacy as well.

long drop curtains

Add luxury with long drop curtains

If you’re wondering about installing long drop curtains in your home, you’re not alone. These elegant drapes are currently making a serious comeback in both modern and heritage homes. It’s no surprise really; there’s something truly satisfying about hearing the swish of a long, opulent curtain over a polished timber floor. And if you scan the internet for ‘before and after’ shots, you’ll quickly see the magic a long drape can weave on the whole look of your property.

Long drop curtains are a great way to add a sense of luxury and drama to your interior décor scheme. They may not be for everyone; if you have a small apartment with low ceilings for example, you may find that your long drop curtains appear to be running the show. However, astutely applied, curtains with a 250 cm drop or more can add charm and impact to a wide variety of spaces. Of course, the word ‘astutely’ is worth remembering here. Long drop curtains do not work well in areas that may be prone to moisture or high foot traffic. They’re probably best suited to those less functional areas of the home where a softer more elegant feel is required; think bedrooms, living rooms and dining areas.

They’re ideal for covering French doors or longer windows, but can also be used to add height to a room over standard sized windows. The trick of hanging your curtain rod several centimetres above the window and allowing for a full length curtain to the floor or even beyond to create a puddling effect, will completely transform a commonplace interior into a truly extraordinary one.

long drop curtains

Many homeowners consider long drop curtains a major investment; a luxury; something that has to be made ‘bespoke’ for their specific requirements. However with the wide range of pre-made curtains on the market, finding ready made curtains with a 250 cm drop for example is now surprisingly easy. These curtains are available in an inspiring array of colours, finishes and textures and amazingly they won’t put too much of a dint in your wallet. If you know how to shop around, a really high quality set of drapes, sometimes even lined, could be yours for less than $100. Given the amount of fabric and workmanship required to create bespoke curtains, this is a truly value-for-money proposition.

To make the most of your ready-made long drop curtains you can choose from a wide variety of folds and hangs; for example a pinch pleat might work for a more formal look, while eyelets might create a more relaxed and casual ambience. You might also want to think about tracks and rods, be they hidden tracking systems or exposed decorative rods to co-ordinate with, say a timber floor. The rules for long drop curtains are fairly broad; white sheers can look stunning, but so too can darker, denser fabrics. One thing to bear in mind if you’re thinking about puddling your curtains however, is that really bulky fabrics may not work so well; something lighter, with a taffeta feel, may be just the ticket!.

Readymade curtains: a quick and cost effective solution

If you’re looking to give your interiors a facelift without creating too much of an impact on your back pocket, ready made curtains could be the answer. There is now a wide array of readymade drapes available on the market, and you may well be surprised by the quality and range on offer.

With windows one of the most eye-catching features of any room, it makes sense that they should be a considered investment. Many homeowners may opt for custom designed drapes to create a window treatment that co-ordinates closely with their décor scheme, but those faced with budgetary or time constraints can very likely find what they’re looking for in ready-made curtains.Readymade curtains provide a fuss free solution to window treatments and are one of the most effective ways of quickly enhancing an interior.

Using readymade curtains to make your own personal décor style statement offers both convenience and value for money, since they avoid many of the overheads and expense involved with custom made drapes. They are also produced in large volumes, which helps bring the price down further. By contrast, custom made curtains require more costly time inputs.

Many ready made curtains and related products, including blackout curtains, sheer curtains and curtain tracking, can now be purchased ready to hang in your home. Whether your tastes are classic or contemporary, the breadth of readymade curtains available is being continually broadened to ensure you’ll find something to suit your budget and your lifestyle.

Readymade curtains

Ready made curtains are offered in wide range of materials, print patterns, colours and sizes. There are also a vast number of styles available from most reputable retailers, including pencil pleat, pinch pleat, box inverted pleat, eyelet curtains in blockout, translucent and sheer fabrics. Hooks and tiebacks, rods and tracks and matching accessories such as cushions are also on offer.

There is a general perception that ready made curtains, as a low cost option, entail a lower standard in terms of quality and finish, and that to attain a truly high end look, custom made curtains are the solution. However, just because ready made curtains are a lower cost, quicker option, this does not have to mean a compromise on quality. Reputable suppliers will use carefully sourced, high quality fabrics, with all curtains made with close attention to detail by experienced workers.

Most curtain specialists will be able to provide expert advice on how to measure, what fabrics to use, and how to achieve the most from your window coverings. Many also offer specials and discounts on readymades, making them even better value for money.

Due to their growing popularity, the choice of readymade drapes on the market can be quite daunting, so it’s advisable to research the market and wide numbers of options available.

Also worth remembering is that ready-made curtains will be produced to fit the most popular window sizes and shapes on the market, so if your windows are an unusual size or shape,it’s worth taking some measurements along when you’re curtain shopping.

Close-up on curtains

While many home owners continue to focus their interest on blinds, the traditional curtain continues to undergo a boom, with a multitude of exotic prints and fabrics inspiring consumers to opt for the timeless elegance of the drape. And aside from the grace of a beautifully hung set of curtains, their insulating and privacy-enhancing properties are second to none.

For those who think a curtain is a simple product, think again! There are a vast number of curtain options available, each offering a different look and function. Just some of them are listed here.

Pinch pleat curtains

Pinch pleat curtains

Pinch pleat curtains are ideal for a traditional or elegant look. So named because the top of the curtain is literally pinched together, the pleats are evenly spaced and usually weighted at the bottom of the seams. A pinch pleated drape is hung usually using curtain hooks attached to a rod or rings that hang from a decorative rod.

Pencil pleat curtains

Pencil pleat curtains

Pencil pleat drapes are a fairly standard curtain that provides a more casual look for your curtains, with the folds of the drape falling in a soft and evenly spaced manner. Many curtains come in a pencil pleat finish, which adds a great finish to any interior.

Box pleat curtains

Box pleated curtains are characterised by deep folds that generally follow the full length of the curtains and have a formal, pleated look. They work very well in classic or formal homes, in particular in rooms where visual impact is needed, such as sitting or dining rooms.

Eyelet Curtains

Eyelet Curtains

For a more contemporary look, eyelet curtains are made using metallic rings at the header through which the curtain rod is ‘threaded’. Eyelet curtains are ideal for light to medium weight fabrics they are a great option for a modern bedroom or lounge.

Tab top curtains

Similar to eyelet curtains, tab top curtains have fabric loops on the top and are hung on a rod. Again, these are great for more informal or contemporary settings.

Sheer curtains

Sheer curtains are a very attractive option that lets in light and allows some degree of privacy from the outside looking in.They are often, but not always, used in conjunction with heavier curtains that ensure greater privacy and protection from glare. With a wide array of interesting fabrics now on the market, sheers’ ability to let light in can create beautiful visual effects.

Blackout curtains

The best blackout curtains are able to block about 99% of the light that would ordinarily flow into your window. This light blocking ability is great for areas where light control is necessary, such as children’s bedrooms or home cinemas. Given the extremes of the Australian climate, they are also a great way of protecting interior carpets and fabrics from the glare of the sun during the hotter months of the year.

The choice of curtains available can be a little overwhelming – so if you’re uncertain about what to choose, seek the guidance of an expert. And it’s also worth noting that good installation is absolutely critical to make the most of your investment in curtains!
